The situation in Kerala remains precarious with water levels still rising dangerously in many rivers and people stranded in many areas waiting for help to arrive. Midfielder Vinit Rai wrote on his twitter handle, “Sometimes the nicest people have to appear for the toughest test. You are God’s own country and you will always be so. Dubai, Aug 4 (IANS): India’s 5-0 series win over Zimbabwe has helped it strengthen its position as the No.1 ranked team in the ICC One-Day International (ODI) rankings table. Though the series sweep earned India just one point to help it finish at 123, it now has a lead of nine points over No.2 ranked Australia. Meanwhile, South Africa and Sri Lanka have swapped places with the Asian side moving into fourth place after gaining three points and the African side slipping to fifth after conceding five....

Plans to jam mobile phones during matches and ban cheerleaders from the sidelines are unlikely to cure Indian cricket of the scourge of corruption, commentators of the sport said Tuesday. Officials announced an ambitious 12-point plan on Monday aimed at ridding the multi-billion dollar Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament of illegal betting and spot-fixing scandals that have engulfed the game. Jamming phone towers to stop calls to bookmakers were among actions flagged by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), along with a strict player code of conduct and a ban on their attendance at after-match parties, as part of “Operation Clean-up”....

The duo took centre stage after a rare failure by skipper Virat Kohli....

India dismissed Australia for 291 with two balls remaining in an extended penultimate session on day five to win an engrossing, low-scoring contest. Set 323 runs to win, Australia’s lower-order provided gritty resistance to edge toward the target with the last three wickets adding 104 runs before the hosts were bowled out after 119.5 overs. India shared the wickets around with Ravichandran Ashwin (3-93), Jasprit Bumrah (3-68) and Mohammed Shami (3-65) claiming three each....

Haseeb Hameed batted through pain to remain unbeaten on 13 at lunch, with Chris Woakes on one at the other end as England slumped to 156 for seven, a lead of 22, at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium....

City clubs Mohun Bagan and Bhowanipore are scheduled to lock horns in the tie. “There are 60 to 70 per cent chances of thunderstorms on Saturday. There will be intermittent showers.
