New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) Rank outsiders India ended their maiden FIFA U-17 World Cup campaign in a cry of pain and agony as they were handed a 0-4 thrashing by two-time champions Ghana in their final group match here today. The Indians played their hearts out in the final Group A game but that was not enough as formidable Ghana outplayed them in all departments. The scoreline, though, would not tell the exact story....

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur declared open the tournament with her blazing hundred against New Zealand at the Providence, the same venue where India will face Ireland. Murali Vijay (39) and Cheteshwar Pujara (34) will return after the break looking to push on and justify skipper Virat Kohli’s decision to bat first at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium....

After the first ODI was washed out, India maintained their superiority in the shorter format over England for a successive win. Spinners gave India the advantage, bowling out the hosts for 227 in 50 overs, and a clinical batting performance saw the visitors chase down the target with 42 balls to spare. Ambati Rayudu’s responsible 64 not out off 78 balls was the top score of the day. Rayudu was well supported by Ajinkya Rahane (45), who opened the batting in place of the injured Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli (40) and Suresh Raina (42), the centurion from the last match....

It was a memorable debut for Bhowneesh Mendiratta at the senior world shooting championship. He maintained his calm in the final match to finish fourth overall. Aniket Jadhav struck early for India and Aman Chetri doubled their advantage only for Sulaiman Al Dhuwayhi to restore hope for the Saudis 11 minutes before the interval. Saudi Arabia’s Mali missed from the spot with the last kick of the first half. But Feras Al Brikan’s quick-fire brace in the final 10 minutes looked to have won it for the Saudis before captain Wangjam kept India in the tournament at the death....

India started really well, with Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan scoring freely and putting together an 81-run partnership before Rohit was dismissed for 42 from 44 balls. After that, Virat Kohli and Dhawan stitched together a 103-run partnership but the latter got out for 96 runs from 90 balls. Kohli and KL Rahul then provided the acceleration India needed in the middle overs, before Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja powered the hosts to 340 for the loss of 6 wickets....

For Australia the result should cause disappointment as they started in spectacular fashion, thrashing India in the first match of the series. But the Virat Kohli-led team showed that they remain a very tough side to beat at home. Now that the series is done and dusted, it is time for us to look back at the contest and identify the five big takeaways from it. Even though we are a long way away from the next ODI World Cup and the focus is presently on the T20 World Cup set to be held later this year, there are still important things to take note of from these three matches....

Kuala Lumpur, July 24 (IANS) Indian boys finished sixth after losing to Chinese Taipei in the fifth-sixth classification match of the 21st Asian Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championships here on Friday. After losing to South Korea 0-3, India defeated Singapore 3-0 in the seventh-eighth classification contest and ran into Taipei to finish but lost. China, as expected, won the gold medal while South Korea and Japan finished second and third respectively....

In the men’s doubles, Purav Raja and Divij Sharan bowed out after failing to win the first round on Wednesay. The fourth-seeded Indian combo of Raja and Sharan lost 7-6(5) 4-6 6-8 to the German team of Dustin Brown and Jan-Lennard Struff. Rajan and left-handed Sharan had a good build-up to the Wimbledon as they won two Challenger titles – in Manchester and Surbiton. With the number of COVID-19 funerals approaching 1,000 a day in the city, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation said they plan to create temporary human funeral pyre platforms – or structures meant for burning bodies – at a municipal dog crematorium site. The 3.5-acre site was recently developed and has yet to be operational for animals, but will now be used to free up space for additional funeral processing in the city, the Times of India reported....
